Every now and then I have cause to go back and look at some of my previous work. On this occasion, I reviewed a piece I made for Jones Crafts some 7 years ago. I like the wide frame and the recess, so I adapted that concept for my latest piece from my Glowforge laser:
I’ve used a 3mm greyboard to form the elements of the shadow frame, which is 7.5″ square and one inch deep. I’ve used some battery-powered mini-LEDs to backlight the silhouette nativity and to shine through the star. These were inserted through 3mm holes and fixed into place using hot glue.
The paint job was with DecoArt Americana acrylic paints and a considerable overspray when splattering with the white to create the starfield. I tried to get a gradient from dark to lighter blue and managed it to some extent, but the lighter area at the top wasn’t as light as my prototype. Thus the gold accents were added to get some contrast between the lettering/star and the sky.
I’ve deliberately used the word ‘believe’ as my sentiment as it has come into common use in Christmas crafts. It’s usually associated with a Santa image, or ‘the magic’ of Christmas, and I thought it would be great to associate it again with the Christian meaning of Christmas.
What should I charge for this? Or more precisely, what would you pay to buy this? Feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts…
