I had the privilege of hosting three of the church’s young people’s group (in other words ‘yoof’) last night in The Studio. We had two hours to work on a project, so I rummaged in my ‘for altering’ drawer and lifted out some Ikea Malma mirrors that were collecting dust. I also dusted off a technique I learnt years ago and came up with an altered art project.
What we did
- Remove mirror panel with a sharp scalpel
- Wrap frame in self-adhesive foil
- Apply your choice of alcohol ink colours, repeating as required
- Using archival ink to stamp images and then rub off with a clean cloth (faux bleach effect for alcohol inks)
- Seal with Kryon Triple Thick Glaze spray and dry
- Apply pre-designed and cut vinyl lettering
- Glue mirror back in
Colour choices were fabulous – one was a delight of green and yellows, another resembled flame oxidised copper and the third was a swirly sapphire blue. Fabulous evening 🙂
Fabulous project. Loved the result.
