Commission: Castle Series, no. 3, Criccieth

I love Criccieth Castle – less as a ruin, but more because of it’s place on the hilly promontory above the village. It gives such a stark silhouette, reflected in the bay.

Previous paintings in the series: Caernarfon CastleRaglan Castle

Criccieth Castle painting

I’ve used for this painting

  • Generic stretched canvas, 60x60cm
  • Liquitex Professional Spray Paint: Parchment / Brilliant Purple / Dioxazine Purple
  • Black and White Gesso
  • DecoArt Media Ultra Matte Varnish

I had problems with blocked spray nozzles whilst doing the spray paint backgrounds for the remaining four canvases. The canvases were also of variable quality, and some had a few stretch marks which didn’t help. However, as these paintings will be seen at a distance, in a very large room, I hope it won’t be too noticeable.

The sky looks brooding and stormy, entirely because of a happy accident… I still don’t have the hang of aerosol paint spraying. I regret doing the dry brush marks to signify water ripples, as they look clumsy and too heavy. I’d normally attempt to paint them out, but due to the spray background, and the rest looking ok, I can’t.
