In between creating Christmas lanterns (post to follow), I have had some time to do some more Bible journaling. In readiness for next month’s Bible journaling session, I’ve been looking at using colour palettes. I’ve used design-seeds.com as my source – there are oodles of prepared palettes to choose from along with the inspiration photos.

Bible Journaling: five more examples
Here are five more Bible journaling illustrations, complete with a free downloadable outline. I’ve been getting in some practice with watercolour pencils as my next Bible journaling session will be featuring them. Another version of watercolour is using studio safe solvents to move around the wax carrier for the Polychromos pencils, giving much the same effect (though waterproof of course). The solvent is less likely to swell the paper fibres compared to water and is my preferred technique, though the effect is less translucent than watercolour.

Art Journal Page: Bleeding Tissue
I’m on a roll this week – two things shared and it’s only Tuesday. My next art journaling session will feature ‘bleeding tissue paper’. For the uninitiated, this isn’t the type of tissue paper you’d use for gift wrapping as when it gets wet, it bleeds colour. The final result is similar to using watercolours. It tends to be a bit random, so those that like precise will be struggling! Oh, and what was in my head didn’t reach the page – I meant to write a ‘splash’ of colour. I couldn’t work out a way of changing it, so it is what it is.

Bible Journaling: more examples
I’ve been creating some new Bible journaling this week. I’ve also been trying out some different art materials – more info after the gallery.
Art Journal Page: #PASC0219
It’s time to share my submission to the February Pick-A-Stick Challenge #PASC0219. I’m working in my very first art journal started in 2011. There are lots of spreads where I was playing with backgrounds and which had never been ‘finished’.
Art Journal Page: #PASC0119
For the unfamiliar, PASC stands for Pick-A-Stick Challenge. It has been a long while since I last participated in the challenge, and the format has changed slightly. The team now randomly draw words which it is left to us to interpret artistically. The only stipulation is that the order of the steps is followed. Everything else is artistic licence, and anything can happen before, during and after the steps to complete the page. There’s also a shorter ATC (Artist Trading Card) option. Here’s my January 2019 layout:

Bible Journaling: Book ends
Here are a couple of Bible journaling examples where the extra space at the end of a book can be used for larger illustrations. I felt that both needed a bolder background than I would normally consider as there was a lot of white space that made the text look particularly lonely!

Art Journal Page: 2016?
On Monday night I have my art journal session in The Studio, and we’re using the prompt ‘New Year’. This layout developed from a teaching session I did with a new Studio guest a few weeks ago, showing the difference and similarities between Distress Oxides (left-hand side) and Distress Inks (t’other side). A quick layer of acrylic paint forms the background to the white text. The purple text is a combination of stamped and handwritten, using Distress Oxides and Posca pen respectively.
Bible Journaling: When it all goes wrong…
As with everything internet, I tend to only post things I am happy with. It’s the same with quality control in The Studio – it only goes out of the door if either my guest is happy, or I’m happy (and hopefully both) with the result of hard work. Today I’m going to share the process that led to this illustration:
Bible Journaling: New Year
Happy New Year to all my loyal readers and Studio guests! A new year is a great time to resolve to start something new – it just so happens I’m starting a new teaching session each month looking at Bible journaling. It’ll be on the third Monday evening, starting in January. For the first session, we’ll look at materials and media, as well as embarking on our first journaling.
In the meantime, I’ve done some more journaling that I thought I would share. First up, a verse for the new year in both my NIV and NLT journaling Bibles:
