Art Journaling: Spring quote

Spring quote by Robin WilliamsIt’s a while since I posted anything art journally, partly as I was doing the Wanderlust course last year. That is still waiting for me to finish! I have still been holding monthly art journal sessions in The Studio and some of the themes have been taken from what I have learnt over the year. This month’s theme was ‘start with the same quote’ and I chose a spring quote from Robin Williams (the quintessential American comedian).

Wanderlust 2022: Watercolours – weeks 29-35

I’ve procrastinated a bit on my homework for this section as I and watercolours often do not get on well together. The lessons have been great on Wanderlust 2022, with each of the tutors carefully and patiently explaining the techniques they use so that they are, in the main, replicable. Here are my results from weeks 29-35…

Various mixed media techniques on papers other than watercolour paper have generally worked ok. I still haven’t fallen in love with watercolours as a medium, but am glad I have tried them. Oh, and buying decent tube watercolours made such a difference to the vibrancy of the colours over the student quality hard pan collections I normally use.

Wanderlust 2022: Weeks 22-28

Update time on how I am getting on with the online Wanderlust 2022 mixed media course. The last seven weeks have been concentrating on using craft acrylics. We learnt they are generally cheaper and less pigmented acrylics and have a large premixed colour palette. Then we learned how to use them in various ways to make our art journal pages. I have fallen behind in the course due to holidays and that hot spell (which made the paint dry too quickly), but I’m catching back up. Here’re my takes on the seven lessons:

Wanderlust 2022: Weeks 15-21

Continuing on with my art journaling course, Wanderlust 2022, we’ve been concentrating on using artist acrylics for the past 7 weeks. It’s been interesting to revise colour mixing and use ‘proper’ acrylics with their better opacity. There’s a self-portrait, a mini Gelli-printed art journal, a homage to my favourite artist and some collage and glazing. Here’s what I produced…

Wanderlust 2022: Weeks 8-14

For this section of the fabulous Wanderlust 2022 art journaling/mixed media online course, we’ve been looking at using modelling paste and image transfers. Each week we’ve been set a different theme with a guest teacher showing us their project ideas and techniques. My previous sessions are here. This section’s layouts are here:

Wanderlust 2022: Weeks 1-7

It’s been several years since I last did the Wanderlust online course (2016). It has gone from strength to strength, and this time it offers a year of weekly prompts, lessons and inspiration for mixed media art journaling. Unfortunately, it’s too late to enrol for this year’s course, but it is worth watching out for the early bird offers for next year which are usually 50% off the regular price.

The themed sections start with an introductory week, outlining the studio supplies and techniques that are coming up in the next six weeks. Then follows a weekly tutorial from guest tutors furthering exploration of the theme and showing off their individual styles during their tutorial. This can be anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and a half of teaching!

These are my pages from the first section of the course: gesso and gel mediums.

Art Journal Page: Scratch ‘n’ scrape

It’s lovely to have restarted my art journaling sessions here at the Studio (first and third Monday evenings of the month). This means that I have also returned to my art journal after a several-month hiatus to create the sample pages for the session. This month the theme is scratch ‘n’ scrape, in part known in the trade as sgraffito. We’ll also be playing with analogous and complementary colours. The overall effect is quite grungy and builds up using quite a few layers and media.

If you’d like to know more then I have one space left on Monday 4th October and four spaces on Monday 18th October, just let me know if you’d like to come.

Bible Journaling 12

It’s been a long long while since I have done any Bible Journaling – probably since COVID started way back last year. Actually, now I come to think of it, I did some for New Year 2021. I had got into the habit of creating illustrations ready for my Bible Journaling classes each month, but as classes weren’t happening due to the virus neither was my own journaling practice.

Yesterday and today, however, were spent illustrating, drawing, colouring and painting with even a little gilding for good measure. Here are five more illustrations, and there is a free downloadable PDF featuring the designs in my store (Bible Journaling 12).

Creative JumpStart 2021: Week 2

I set myself the challenge of trying all of the techniques in the 10th Creative JumpStart organized by Nathalie Kalbach. This week included Gelli printing with a homemade stencil, illustrations with watercolour, tonal painting with gouache, paper quilting two ways, using texture in watercolour and stitching a story. I almost didn’t do the watercolour ones, as I really don’t get along well with the medium… but I had a go and was rather happy with the results. I haven’t done the stitching one as I don’t have kids doing naive outline drawings! Each of the featured artists has recorded a 10-minute video tutorial, and they’re all super easy to follow. Here’s this week’s work:

Creative Jumpstart 2021: The first week

I signed up to do Creative Jumpstart 2021 back in November. What with Covid and no studio groups to prep for, my creativity has had a minor slump and I’ve not even had the mojo to create for the fun of it. Creative Jumpstart has a daily 10-15 minute tutorial or inspiration video to watch and so far it has included monoprinting, art journaling, illustration, watercolour and collage as part of the ‘storyteller’ theme. I’ve had a go at all but one so far and it’s been great to challenge my prejudices against some media (watercolour!) and to try out new media. Here are my attempts at the first week of projects:
