It’s time to share my submission to the February Pick-A-Stick Challenge #PASC0219. I’m working in my very first art journal started in 2011. There are lots of spreads where I was playing with backgrounds and which had never been ‘finished’.
This is the start point, handily the colours matched the Fuchsia and Amber of the challenge. I was happy to work over it given the botched image transfer.
Step 1: Knife
I used a palette knife to add Dylusions Funky Fuchsia and Pure Sunshine, scraping then down the page before throughly dryng them.
Step 2: Sand
I sanded back the paint I’d just put on, making areas more translucent showing more of the background, other areas went through to paper, whilst some remained painted and untouched.
Steps 3-5: Geometric/Stencil/Tissue
I added the checkerboard pattern using a stencil and Distress Oxides in Picked Raspberry and Fossilized Amber. I then sealed the ink with a spray matte sealant so that wet mediums didn’t move the ink. I finished off these steps by adding some Tim Holtz Postale Tissue Wrap.
Step 6: Elephant
I added photos I took in Sri Lanka in 1999 when we visited the elephant orphanage at Pinnawala. Finishing touches: add lettering (cut out and collaged) and an outline in Pitt Artist Pen in a coordinating magenta along with the handwritten text.
