Bible Journaling: Acrylics, masking and off-the-page

It’s a while since I have done any Bible journaling, but for this month’s session, I did an off-the-page piece. I wanted to encourage my class to work outside their Bible and show off their skills. This is designed to fit into a Ribba frame from Ikea and is approx. 8″ square. It is available to purchase here.

This illustration is for next month’s session: masking. I created the ‘mountains’ by using pieces of torn paper as the mask for Distress Inks in Shabby Shutters and Forest Moss to get the shading. The sky is Tumbled Glass. I did the text freehand with Posca markers. I think it worked out ok, though I would have preferred more evidence of the mountains behind the text.

Finally, some acrylic paint use. The distress inks had bled through the page a little, so I covered up the reverse of the above illustration with two acrylic paint colours before adding the text with Posca pens. The white wasn’t quite white enough so I added Dr Ph Martin’s Bleedproof white paint over the top. There was enough tooth from the acrylic paint to add doodled flowers coloured with Polychromos pencils to finish off the piece.

  1. Love the artwork. If I may say, I think the balance of mountains/text is perfect. And Isaiah’s words could fit into the New Testament ………..
