That’s Crafty! Showpieces (March)

Apologies – I intended to post my show samples for my March shows somewhat sooner than this. But, as they say, better late than never! Keep reading for more details on each project.

Roses and hearts trinket box.

Stick an ATC chunky together, but don’t glue the top section down. Paint the box with Christmas Red multisurface paint. Stencil texture paste to the lid, allow to dry, paint with white multisurface paint, then stencil Christmas Red on top. Add TH Ideaology Curio knob. Stamp rose onto base using archival ink.

Put together ATC chunky and cover with metallic silver multisurface paint. Paint one side with a thin layer of TC! Crackle Glaze and dry. Paint over a coat of purple multisurface paint and dry. Stamp and emboss tall house onto Matched greyboard and paint with watered down multisurface paint. Using greyboard moon, spritz lightly with water and then batter it with the top of a paintbrush handle to create hammer effect. Paint with metallic silver and stick to ATC. Stamp sentiment in grey archival ink onto cardstock and adhere to back of moon.

Stamp and emboss butterfly on to Matched greyboard piece. Paint with watered-down multisurface paints. Construct ATC Chunky and then paint with metallic gold multisurface paint. Paint a thin layer of crackle glaze on one surface, dry. Paint layer of Ocean multisurface paint over the crackle and dry. Stamp sentiment in archival ink onto cardstock and mount with butterfly on foam pads.

Construct 4.5×9″ Chunky and undercoat with Green and Evergreen multisurface paints. Create tree by stippling texture paste onto the surface, allow to dry and paint over with Chestnut Brown paint. Shade with black paint. Using leaves stencil, add leaves in Evergreen and Lime. Stamp and emboss the cats and dog before painting with your choice of watered down paint colours. Cut off the sides of the cats and mount at different depths on the side of the Chunky.

A show-stopper piece! Construct 6×6″ Chunky and undercoat with Chestnut Brown multi-surface paint. Add a thin layer of TC! crackle glaze to front and dry. Paint a thin layer of white multisurface paint over the glaze and dry. Add lots of water to a drop of Chestnut Brown and wash over the white to dull it down. Add smears of the same paint to create the knots. Draw plank edges with brown Posca pen and draw a centre line with a black fineliner. Add detail to knots with fineliner. Stamp cat, mouse and fish and colour with alcohol markers. Stamp sign and amend with Posca pen. Mount cat and mouse on layers of foam pads to add depth.

Construct 6×6″ Chunky – paint top half in Bright Blue and bottom half in Teal. Add second coat if required. Mask off the bottom half and spritz top with Blue Sparkler spray, dry. Paint dividing line in Chestnut Brown. Paint a thin layer of TC! crackle glaze over Teal, dry. Paint a layer of Ocean over glaze and dry. Mix a little black with white multisurface paint to make a mid-grey and paint in clouds, dry. Add a thin coat of glaze over the clouds, dry, and then a layer of white paint. Stamp and emboss the houses and paint with watered-down multisurface paints. For the reflections, stamp the image onto a Gelli Arts plate and then transfer from gelli plate to the Chunky. Water-down the paint a lot more and colour the reflections. Finally, use a small paintbrush and some Teal paint to paint back the crackle across the reflections.

Construct ATC Chunky, but don’t glue one of the short sides. Apply texture paste through stencil direct to one side of the Chucky and allow to dry. Paint over whole piece with black multisurface paint. Paint individual ‘bricks’ with each colour and metallic gold. Finally, apply TC! 3D gloss gel through the stencil over the painted areas and allow to dry. Add TH Curio knob to top.

Unseen on TV, this uses the 8×8″ Chunky. Undercoat with TC! black gesso. Using a natural sponge, dab on layers of brown, black and metallic gold paints to build a granite-like effect. Dry. Using a palette knife, add a layer of TC! 3D gloss gel. Spritz the wet gel with gold Sparkler spray and allow to dry overnight. For the tealight surround, stencil gold metallic paint onto acetate and cut out the centre circle, and one ‘petal’. Stick cut edges together and glue into place on the plinth, using the centre circle to hold in place.

Thanks to Yiannis for the pic! This was the big make for the shows. Start with a 8×8″ Chunky, mask off the tree trunk and branches and add a layer of texture paste. Allow to dry, then add bark texture by stencilling texture paste in stages, allowing to dry between each section. Cover with black multisurface paint, dry. Paint a thin layer of TC! crackle glaze over black paint and dry. Paint layer of Chestnut Brown over glaze and dry. Add shading with black paint before removing masking and painting remainder of the block with Christmas Green paint. Create leaves using Evergreen and Lime through stencil. Make five stamped leaves on matching greyboard pieces and glue in place overlapping edge of Chunky – glue extra ‘branches’ to the back of the overlaps. Continue adding leaves (using distress inks to colour), add toadstools and construct the fairy door from lollipop sticks, all painted with watered-down paints.
