This evening we are playing with all sorts of watersolubles for our Art Journal Session. I’ve raided my stash for media that we don’t use often in the sessions, with pencils, paints, crayons and gelatos on the menu. The session is all about experimentation and the different ways the water interacts with the pigments on the page. We’re adding some stamping and hand-drawn embellishments to adorn the page:

Art Journal Page: Beer Festival
My annual pilgrimage to Peterborough Beer Festival this year was on 23rd August. Of course I went to meet up with friends… it’s purely coincidence we had 400 real ales to choose from at the time. While supping such delights, I’ve recorded my tasting notes in my art journal. It looks worse than it is – I was only sampling thirds of a pint of most. It’s also brilliant that the organisers ensure bottles of water are easily available at just 50p per 500ml.
The page uses all the bits and bobs in my journal travel kit. It was a challenge doing the background and lettering on the train from Leicester, particularly over the points when the train rocked a fair amount!

Art Journaling: Water-solubles
For November’s art journaling class at The Studio, we’ll be playing with water-solubles. This page spread is a mix of Caran D’Ache Neocolor II water-soluble wax crayons, Derwent Inktense pencils and blocks and black pigment pen. It’s an experimental page, and I quite like the blending of the colours, the framing of the colour blocks and text, but if I were to do it again, I’d want to space things a bit better and perhaps play with the depth by intertwining the frames better and adding some drop shadows… I was also considering adding embossing paste squares – but I think that would just be overdoing it a little.
Art Journal Page: Alphabets by Design
I’ve just got back from a couple of days holidaying near Cromer, and true to form, the English weather was not favourable – it was a bank holiday after all. It did, however, mean that I had chance to use my art journal travel kit to finish off this page which has been a work in progress for a couple of years. Each time I found a new font suitable for hand drawing, I added it to the borders. This weekend, I added the zentangled letters and the rest of the centre text.
Background is distress inks on gesso, text combination of black pigment markers/Sharpies/Signo white gel pen. Colour added using Caran d’Ache Neocolor II crayons with a waterbrush.
