Art Journal Session: Christmas NBU

This month’s theme for the last art journal session of the year is ‘Christmas NBU’. A long while ago, I suggested the tag #nbu for ‘never been used’. I’m not sure it caught on… So this wintery layout uses items that have not been used yet alongside other bits and bobs that came to hand:

Christmas NBU - the completed layout.

What’s new?

I’m sure I have lots of wintery-themed products in The Studio, but these fell into my shopping basket during my last online order: dies, inks, paper, stencils and stamps…

Christmas NBU - the never been used kit

The (self-imposed) challenge was on. How many of these could I incorporate into my layout? As it turns out, I did quite well, only missing two of the mini-stencils. Here’s what I did with my stash:

Step-by-step

Glue down the scrapbook paper

Trim off the bottom of the scrapbook paper – that’s the sentiment border. Cut a piece to the size of your layout, keep the spare for later. Stick down to the journal using your preferred method (I use Yes! glue as it doesn’t buckle the paper). If you overlap the page slightly you can trim the paper to fit exactly. I also pre-folded the paper down the middle, stuck down one side and then closed the book to stick down the other – it ensures the journal will still open and close without straining the join.

Using a background stamp and white pigment ink, roughly stamp sections of the image over the background paper to add a bit of texture and interest. Though StazOn is meant to be used on non-porous surfaces, it works just as well on paper.

It’s a bit hard to see, but does show up better in the pic below, and watch out for it’s effect on distress oxides later on.

Using a make-up sponge and a choice of stencils and paint colours, add layered elements to the corners and outside borders to create a vignette effect.

Next, apply white modelling/embossing paste through a stencil creating texture and contrast. Be sure to wash the stencil and palette knife before the paste dries. The paste can be dried to touch dry with a heat tool, but is best left to dry fully for a couple of hours.

Cut out a couple of panels from the cropped scrapbook paper using the dies. Edge the die cuts with the black pigment ink before adhering them to the page.

Mask off one of the circles on another of the mini stencils and apply distress oxide through it with a finger dabber. Dry with a heat tool and outline with a black paint pen. Add highlights with a white paint pen

For the finishing touches, stick the sentiment strip across the page and trim the edges as required. Mask and edge with more of the paint colours. (Optional: add some Stickles glitter glue or perhaps Liquid Pearls for a bit of bling.)

One last thing…

During the sample-making process, I used the StazOn Pigment ink on porous surfaces (i.e. paper). I can let you know that it has stuck firmly to the rubber stamp (non-porous) as well as onto the glass mat I work on:

My normal cleaning wipes, which remove stubborn acrylic amongst other things, did not shift the dried ink at all – most impressive. A quick rub down with StazOn cleaner or isopropyl alcohol did the trick.

Next session

The next art journaling session will be on Monday, 6th January 2025 when we will be playing with ‘twinchies’ – mini works of art just two inches square. The session starts at 7:30pm and costs £5 with all materials provided. Art journals are available to purchase at £2 on the night if you don’t already have one. Beginners are more than welcome.
