Card making: Online Card Classes – Extraordinary Embossing Folders Day 2

I’ve been playing with more dry embossing for Day 2 of the Online Card Class; Extraordinary Embossing Folders. For these cards, I have used inks in different ways with the folders, playing with contrast and the debossed and embossed sides. There was also a technique using shadow word dies, but I don’t have any of those. Instead, I created the same effect with my Silhouette Cameo and laser cutter using cardstock and an offset set of text:

Embossed debossed card - greens

Inking the front or back of the embossing folder before running it through the machine colours the high points or the background. The high points fill the debossed side, and the opposite is true for the other side. The sentiment is cut and drawn on the Silhouette Cameo.

Embossed debossed card - pinks

Same technique, this time playing with pigment vs dye inks on the same coloured cardstock. This one uses a 2D folder.

Floral debossed card with black overlay

I debossed with 3D folder and then painted the flowers etc with distress inks and a waterbrush – it doesn’t matter if you go over the edges. It’s also great for shading when the ‘paint’ settles into the dips. Fill in the background (flat bits are on the top) with black ink.

Burgundy and gold embossed debossed card

More pigment ink, this time a metallic gold. It takes repeated applications to get a smooth colour, and it helps to use an extra shim for good even pressure to transfer the ink. Oh, yes… Measure twice, cut once to get the thirds sorted and trim to size. Hide raggedy bottoms with the overlaid sentiment panel.

Inked timber background birthday card

Of course, doing a new class means I had to do some necessary purchasing. This card uses a 3D folder by Tim Holtz. I started by swiping distress ink pads vertically to make a lined background before embossing and using the inking techniques I learned to pop in the darker grain over the top.
