I’m a fan of Finnabair and her combination of collage and assemblage in her mixed media pieces. There are numerous other artists following the style, and plenty of videos on YouTube showing step-by-step ways of working. Silly old me – I watched one and thought I could remember it as I did my own… This wasn’t the case, so this is pretty much all my own work. It’s the result of a couple of hours work, including cutting out the various chipboard/greyboard elements with my laser cutter. I’ve chucked everything at it!
Starting off with a 5×7″ canvas, I covered it with Tim Holtz tissue paper before adding some crackle paste through stencils. This provides texture, but is all but covered in the final piece. After that, I added some rust paste and raw umber acrylic paint around the top and spritzed with water until there were runnels down the canvas. Dry. After that, it was a matter of building up all the laser cut elements with rust paste and raw umber paint. Gilding wax added a bit of contrast, a spritz of Aged Mahogany distress stain pulled it together – there was too much white at the bottom of the canvas. Finally a spritz of Tarnished Brass Mica Spray helped even more to unify the piece.
If you like it, I’m happy to send it to you for the price of postage.
