Commission: Baku 2016

img_7362For the last two days, I’ve been working with my mum to complete her commission for a piece of artwork featuring the skyline of Baku, Azerbaijan. Mum knew what buildings she would like to include, and provided the primed canvas (roughly 90cm wide) and a sketch of the layout. The first step was to tweak the sketch a little to improve the flow around the picture.

That done, we settled on trying a bas relief technique since she had no preconceptions of a finished piece. Thus started a mammoth 5 hour session cutting, pasting and carving paper clay, finishing at 10:30pm at night in an effort to allow drying time overnight. Unfortunately, humidity prevented that and we had a morning’s hiatus as it dried in the sun. Uneven drying left some pieces lifting, so these were promptly glued back down with gesso.

Next was the decision as to whether to leave it white-on-white, or to add colour. Well, we went with the colour option, and much spraying with DecoArt Media Shimmer Misters in white and turquoise, with a tiniest spritz of DecoArt Media Mister in Primary Cyan. Add water to blend and water spot, dab off with kitchen towel and repeat. Drying brushing with gesso restored the contrast between the buildings and the background. Embellishment with Cosmic Shimmer Gilding Flakes, Stardust Stickles and DecoArt Media Gloss Varnish completed the picture. Then I decided a little more shimmer was needed on the sea, so added a wash of Perfect Pearls Perfect Pearl.

New Summer Distress Inks – Perfect Splatter Distress

I snuck a few minutes in the craft room this morning to tidy up, and managed to play with my new Summer Distress Inks from Ranger. They are really bright hues, reminiscent of Dyan Reaveley’s colour palette, but as with all the other distress ink seasonal ranges, they play nicely together. I combined them with Perfect Pearls from the Jewels kit and the perfect splatter technique I learnt in Creative Chemistry 101 to make this tag. The embossing is Metallic Gold Rich Super Fine from WOW! Embossing Powders.

Creative Chemistry 101 – Day 9

So we reach the penultimate teaching day of the fabulous Creative Chemistry, and Professor Tim is working his alchemy with Distress Inks and Perfect Pearls. I’m used to using Perfect Pearls in my own misting mixtures and love the effect of the Blue Patina mixed with Spiced Marmalade – a really nice faux rust finish. Mixing it up even more with the wrinkle free distress technique has resulted in a textural happy accident!

Perfect Pearls – demo board

Hi all – I’ve been feverishly working away the last two days getting ready for my next demo/workshop day at Kim’s Crafts (Hinckley Branch) on 10th September. In the morning, I’ll be demo’ing all things Perfect Pearls (from Ranger) and this is the demo board I’ve just finished.

I’ve just found it’s next to impossible to photograph pearlescent finishes! But the board shows the basics of applying perfect pearls to medium, then painting on a pearl finish to spritzing with distress inks, stamping over distress stains and inks, and bottom left, applying to UTEE and watching it ooze.
