Art Journal: Modelling Paste Cover [Wanderlust Wk18]

IMG_3015

I’ve jumped a few weeks in my Wanderlust 2016 course – I do aim to go back and catch up, but Andy Skinner was the tutor for this week’s activity, and I just had to get grungy! I transformed the front cover of my latest (A5) journal using his techniques and I’m delighted with the results. I think it looks like embossed leather, and with the soft touch varnish from DecoArt, it even feels like leather. The trickiest thing I found was getting a uniform thickness of modelling paste, so I’ll be working on that the next time I try it.

Used for this project:

  • Dreamweaver Embossing Paste: White
  • DecoArt Media Gesso: White
  • DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics: Burnt Sienna / Raw Umber / Paynes Grey
  • DecoArt Media Antiquing Cream: Carbon Black / English Red Oxide
  • DecoArt Media Crackle Medium: Clear
  • DecoArt Media Soft Touch Varnish
  • Stamp Addicts: Distressed Alphabet
  • Hero Arts: Long Writing Background / Florentine Scroll Background
  • Magenta: swirly heart [K.0389]
  • Stampendous: Cling Artist Elements

  1. This is lovely, Neil. I love the deep texture and the rich colour, just like old embossed leather! The one thing that I think is always absent with faux leather is the smell, and I often wish you could buy a spray of leather smell to finish it off – that would be perfection lol!! What a lovely cover for an art journal, and you will so enjoy using this.

    • I’ve just done a search, and would you believe Amazon sell leather scent for cars. I think a can might have to fall in my shopping cart next time 😉
